"No Horse"

"No Horse"

In Cyprus there is a saying that in an accurate translation would be “No Horse” which shows a state of surprise when something unexpected happens!

I take the opportunity to use this phrase from the recent scandal of horse meat appearing in food supplies like burgers, meatballs, spaghetti etc of some of the biggest suppliers of food across Europe. These supplies were sold in big supermarket chains, even in other types of shops that were selling food, and were consumed by people without them knowing.

The questions that rise from this scandal are many! I will stand in two.

1)    The Ethical part: Too many times big brands or corporations will do unethical things and practices to increase their profits. We have seen cases like oil pollutions, destruction of rain forests, child labour etc being applied with no hesitation.  Someone would expect a lot more from those companies. But they fail us again and again. That is until people take action and show them that their unethical practices are no longer tolerated and they start to change. And usually this happens when people expose them and stop buying their products. Social Media plays a big role in transferring the message worldwide and to make people aware.

2)    Value vs. Price: Being in the retail market myself for many years, I have realized and try to practice a common sense thing. There is a limit on how low a price can go without sacrificing Value! If price is too low then perhaps you should start wondering why (?). Some of these companies have sacrificed value to decrease price and sell more. They have sacrificed Value so much as to lie, and perhaps put in danger our own health! The equation of Value and Price applies in all cases in the business world. Just think of it more next time you buy something, whatever that is.

Some older cases of unethical practices being stopped:
