The London
Olympics 2012 are over and there are quite a few lessons we can learn from what
went on before during and after the games.
One of the
most important lessons that stance out is the use of Social Media and the
impact these can have in our career both personal and professional.
Just a few
days before the Olympics, Greek athlete Voula Papachristou saw her dream of
participating in the games being crushed after she was disqualified for a
comment she made via Twitter.
The comment
was considered inappropriate by the Greek Olympic committee as it seemed to be
offensive and somewhat racist, behaviour not in compliance with the Olympic
spirit and code of ethics.
Voula
Papachristou saw the efforts of four long hard working years, gone waste after
a silly comment on Twitter. This is a perfect example of how much we are
exposed as a personality to the society and how our words, opinions and actions
can impact our career, dreams and future success.
Social
Media is an opportunity to show the Best of ourselves. It’s an opportunity to
extend our noble thoughts and best practices to the people around us and be an
example to be imitated rather than to be avoided.
So think about the consequences a silly thought
expressed could have on your career next time you post a comment via Social
Media platforms. Never also forget you are as much exposed thru Social Media as
you are in real life.
