The Positive way of Planning

Coming towards the end of a year someone can only turn back and count how many successes or setbacks occurred. Planning for the next year can be a lot frustrating for many people because of the uncertainty of what’s going to come.

Too often when planning we concentrate on the things that didn't work out, the difficulties that we will have to carry with us the following year, and the hard decisions we will have to take if the bad scenario of our planning occurs.

In my opinion this way of thinking when looking to plan for the next year is totally wrong. Of course there are difficulties and problems that have frustrated us and may keep on next year but getting in the mood to plan with all this in mind doesn't help at all. On the contrary, focusing on the bad stuff just makes planning harder as we fail to see the opportunities that may be there for us, or just examine what went right this year to repeat it the following.

So when planning for next year I urge you to follow these steps:

1)    Make a list of what was successful for you this year. Examine what went right and see if you can repeat those steps the following year to more tasks or projects that you will work on.

2)    Make a list of what you have right now to help you succeed the next year. Do not focus on what you don’t have as this may block your positive energy to work hard towards your targets. For example if you do not have a website to promote your expertise, use your current network and acquaintances to set up a few speeches.

3)    When planning always mark specific steps that will help you reach your targets. Having targets and making plans is nothing if you do no not have specific steps (positive actions) that will help you along the way.

4)    Finally before beginning to work on next year’s plan you have to have peace of mind. Take a few days off and relax. Let your body, mind and soul find their balance and harmony away from stressful people and thoughts. By doing just that you allow yourself to go back to your core values, refine them, and let them guide you to what is right and wrong for you to do, and work for in the future.
